Opening speaker of the Common Focus day was internationally acclaimed teenage author and voice of youth, Adora Svitak, 13, who provided an insight into what younger audiences want from TV programming. Several speakers addressed Social TV and Interactive TV, and encouraged public broadcasters to create content that could be used to this end.
Organizer of the day Nicoletta Iacobacci, EBU Head of Multiplatform, commented:
“The ‘lean-back’ experience of watching television is being transformed into a ‘lean-forward’, experience expected by audiences, and public service media will provide it all.”
The “Proud to Present” sessions integrated throughout the day showcased the best in public service programming from the past year.
Those chosen were as follows:

Intercultural: Lukaku’s School (VRT, Belgium)
Documentary: Position of the Stars (NPO, The Netherlands)
Entertainment: Our Stars for Oslo (NDR, Germany)

Jean Philip De Tender, Channel Manager from Belgian public broadcaster VRT, presented the acclaimed intercultural programme “Lukaku’s School”, a gritty, hard-hitting series about young people growing up in troubled areas of a big city and in the melting pot of a multicultural school.
De Tender says: “This series was a big success on primetime television, and particularly appealed to younger audiences, with viewing figures reaching 25%. We need to put programmes about diversity on primetime television in Europe. This series proves that it does work.”
Gerard Timmer, Chief Editor and Presenter at IKON, Dutch public broadcaster NPO’s educational channel, presented the international award-winning series “Position of the Stars”. A single shot style was used to film the trilogy, which documents the development of Indonesia between 1998 and the present. The technique involves recording scenes from different angles in one movement, without editing.
Gerard Timmer explains “This series has been aired all over Europe, Asia and America. Its success can be attributed to the pure, natural authentic stories which are captured in a single shot.”

3 May: Eurovision Access Services Experts
Unlike subtitling, audiodescription is substantially more expensive for several reasons:
• The authoring is more ambitious.
• In many countries, voicing is done by professional speakers in dubbing studios.
• The process is more complex
So where does that leave smaller countries…

Small countries cannot afford such a service or they offer a very limited number of programs with audiodescription. This is the reason why SWISS TXT – an enterprise of public television in Switzerland – was watching out for cheaper solutions and did some trials with speech synthesis. At the beginning, almost no one could believe that audio description with speech synthesis was feasible. But it is!

5 May: Join the day of Sessions
Have you ever wanted to get to grips with some of the most up to date and relevant topics for today’s audiences? The newly designed days of sessions at this year’s Summit allow you to do just that.Explore topics such as the gamification of TV, Multiplatform storytelling and connected TV in a way that is easy to digest. Below is a small taster of some of the sessions to give you an idea of what you can expect by attending one or more of the 7 sessions on offer at the Summit this year. Enjoy:
Session “TV@Games” Thursday 5 May 09:30-10:30
Matt Costello will present the “Gamification of TV” and the ideas that underpin this very current concept. Although Gamification is currently a buzz-word that might imply repurposing games on TV; it actually refers to applying a gameplay strategy and approach to your content. Audiences today want more, want to be rewarded and actively look out for opportunities to be engaged and participate. The session will focus on examples of how to make TV content more appealing for all audiences.
Session “Connected TV” Thursday 5 May 11:30-12:30
Anthony Rose, with his invaluable experience of creating the iPlayer and the YouView platform, will discuss TV of the Future. The discussion won’t be technical; it will focus on content, on strategies, on behaviours and on user experience. An exciting insight into the future of Connected TV!
Session “TED Open TV Project” Thursday 5 May 14:00-15:00
This session will focus on the agreement that EBU signed with TED Conferences in order to provide EBU Members with free access to TEDTalks. Broadcasters have permission not only to air the talks, but also to create programmes around them — for example, using local hosts to introduce or wrap up the talks. This agreement fits in well with public service values in bringing quality knowledge and information to wide audiences.
Session “Multiplatform Storytelling” Thursday 5 May 14:00-15:00
We are currently experiencing a moment of radical change in the way that entertainment is created and distributed. TV is losing its predominant role and it is becoming mandatory for broadcasters to embed various forms of interactive technology in their programmes utilizing non-linear narrative strategies and all available media tools. In order to engage all audience-types this session with Ian Ginn and Alison Norrington will focus on audience behaviour and Generation Connected.
Session “Factual Programmes Campaigning” Thursday 5 May 09:30-10:30, Radisson / Schirmer
How can we promote factual programmes today? It’s not just about announcing and advertising programmes in our national written press anymore. The question is: how do we globally promote programmes which we globally conceive for global media? The producers of ambitious documentary series which have been from the very start produced and promoted on an international scale through various platforms tell us about their campaigns.
Session “Cultural Diversity Screening” Thursday 5 May 11:30-12:30, Radisson / Schirmer
Reflecting “Cultural Diversity” of the societies we are living in has become a priority through all genres. A lot has been tried, and a lot has been achieved, not only in news or in factual programmes in general, but also in fiction, entertainment and childrens programmes. Frans Jennekens, the Chairman of the Eurovision Intercultural and Diversity Group, will lead us through the best of Diversity on European TV channels.
Distributing Creativity, Innovation and Design 09.30-10.30 Radisson
Through refreshing terms and paradigms, Josephine Green, advisor to European Futures and Research platforms, will explore and articulate the critical period of transformation that we as a human society are experiencing. Through her framework of Pyramids to Pancakes, she challenges us to think and act differently in our world if we are to prosper and flourish.
Her work explores the need for and the emergence of new social and cultural narratives and their societal, technological and organizational contexts and consequences. Josephine demonstrates the very real need to nurture new growth areas, to decentralize the main functions of Strategy, Research, Innovation and Design, distribute creativity and embrace complexity through new organizational, cultural and leadership models.
Josephine believes it is critical, especially now, for us to embrace the fact that while we know what and where we have come from, we don’t know where and what we are going to. There are no rule books for the next age so we must collectively invent and create our futures. Josephine’s work and tools offer ways of looking at and tackling this historical task.

5 & 6 May: EBUconnect invites you on a journey
Can you change attitudes and get more people to start paying their TV-license in 2011? This is just one of the questions to be tackled in the most recently announced EBUconnect sessions “From chasing to saying thank you” and “Dual screens, not duelling screens”.
These sessions will discuss how broadcasters are increasingly enabling their audience to not just participate but also shape a show.
FROM CHASING TO SAYING THANK YOU
Speaker: Per Leander, Head of Communication at Radiotjänst
How do you get people to accept paying a bill? Can you change attitudes and get more people to start paying their TV-license in 2011? Radiotjänst in Sweden has made just that journey, transforming peoples outlook towards the TV-license into something much more positive. In addition the Image of Radiotjänst has successfully changed from an authority that collects money with force to a body that provides the funding for free and independent media. Using viral, TV and other media ,the campaigns spread has been enormous. More than 45 million unique visitors have seen the viral campaign alone. The work has won many awards for including the Gold in Eurobest and Bronze in Cannes Lions. In this session you will be taken on the journey. Per Leander works as Communication Director at the Swedish authority for collecting license fee - Radiotjänst. He has been responsible for the re-branding of Radiotjänst.
DUAL SCREENS, NOT DUELLING SCREENS
Speaker: Alex Huzzey, Planning Director at Red Bee Media
Dual screens, not duelling screens. How broadcasters can benefit from viewers’ eyes on another device.
Increasingly, audiences are multi tasking whilst watching TV. A recent Harvard Business Review article reported a study which shows that people squeeze 12 hours of media exposure a day into 9 hours.
Rather than see this multi-tasking audience as a threat, broadcasters need to see this trend as an opportunity.
This session argues that dual-screen viewing shouldn’t necessarily take audience attention away from TV content. We know that TV audiences will be dual-screening, but they don’t necessarily have to be online shopping or updating their Facebook on their second screen. Instead, promoting and providing content for dual screens can provide broadcasters with larger audiences to shows and deepen audience engagement and loyalty. Audiences can be watching and participating in content from the broadcaster on the main screen and a secondary device simultaneously.
The presentation will be packed with examples from around the world. We’ll explore the NBC online CRM tool which enables NBC to reward loyalty to their shows by incentivising fans to check-in to NBC shows. We’ll showcase the social media promotion for the US show Bad Girls Club on Oprah Winfrey’s Oxygen Network. By promoting the show with and without social media on the East and West coast, the network proved the impact that social viewing had on increasing ratings. And, we look at how increasingly broadcasters are enabling their audience to not just participate in shows but also shape a show. Seven Days, a reality documentary screened by Channel 4 asked their audience online which ‘characters’ they wanted to see more or less of each week.

5 May: Come and join the TED OpenTV project
A special session with Bruno Giussani, TED European director, to learn more about this opportunity has been organized for Members on 5 May. The EBU has an agreement with TED’s TEDtalks to provide all EBU Members with free access to TEDTalks. Broadcasters will have permission not only to air the talks, but also create programmes around them…

EBU Members including RAI (Italy) , UR (Sweden), and DR (Denmark) are already broadcasting the talks. There is no limit on the number of EBU Members that can join. The content is free so we are encouraging more Members to take this unique opportunity to have access to large volumes of quality and informative content. This agreement fits in well with public service values in bringing quality knowledge and information to wide audiences.
Launched in May 2010, the TED Open TV Project allows EBU members to air TEDtalks for free, provided they follow basic guidelines (no editing, interrupting or showing commercials during the talks). Licensed broadcasters will have permission not only to air the talks, but also create programs around them – for example, using local hosts to introduce or wrap up the talks. It’s truly open-source TV.
What are TEDTalks?
Delivered at the annual conferences, the TEDTalks are short, inspired talks from the world’s most creative thinkers, ranging from 3-18 minutes each. They’re captured on video and distributed online, for free. TED speakers are architects, artists, musicians, inventors, entrepreneurs. Nearly 700 TEDTalks have been posted online on a wide range of subjects (www.ted.com for more information).

5 & 6 May: EBUconnect
An exciting programme is in place for two days of innovation, creativity and excellence. To wet your appetite please learn more about the following two presentations:
● We are not reinventing the wheel: Promotions across the decades, from the 1930’s to the present day! But what, in 70 years has changed? Not as much as you might think!
● Creative Globalization: A showcase of creative work from around the globe

CREATIVE GLOBALIZATION
This presentation looks at broadcasters from around the world and examines how we should always provoke, always connect and always deliver for better promotions and branding. Examples drawn from global broadcast markets will provide international insights into trends and styles and provide reference to local markets to help us challenge the status quo and deliver ‘more’ for audiences. Presented by Nikki Bentley, Group Head of Marketing & Client Services at BDA.
WE ARE NOT RE-INVENTING THE WHEEL
The Victorians reached a stage when they declared with pride – “There is Nothing Left to Invent”. History and fate have a knack of demolishing grandiose statements in spectacular ways!
Today, we think we are at the pinnacle of promotion and marketing expertise, wake up call – so did the admen brilliantly portrayed in the Emmy award winning drama “Madmen”.
But the 1960’s are only one part of a story that goes back, in TV terms, to the 1930’s. If you think that no Promotion could survive from so long ago, think again! In this session we will explore a creative jungle that starts with the oldest known TV Promotion in the world, and goes all the way to the latest cutting edge techniques that will lead us into the next decade. Along the way we will encounter surprising and little seen campaigns that define ‘excellence’, and a few surprising facts!
EBU
Delegates will want to see this session because:
“We want to see work” is the most common demand from delegates, this session full-fills that demand with an inspiring demonstration of where we’ve been, where we are, and where we are going. From the nostalgia of the past, to the future we have yet to encounter, a lot of examples, a little humour, and a mass of inspiration!
Presented by Jim Booth, Creative Director RTE Ireland.

La journée “Point Commun”
Plus de 300 délégués ont participé à cette journée “Point Commun” du 4 mai 2011
The highlight of the Summit, the Common Focus Day, was attended by more than 300 delegates. 20/20 Vision – An eye opener (the theme of the day), provided a colourful and informative array of keynote speeches from the “movers and shakers” of the media world.
Opening speaker of the Common Focus day was internationally acclaimed teenage author and voice of youth, Adora Svitak, 13, who provided an insight into what younger audiences want from TV programming. Several speakers addressed Social TV and Interactive TV, and encouraged public broadcasters to create content that could be used to this end:
- ADORA SVITAK: TALKING ABOUT MY GENERATION
- FABIAN HEMMERT: TANGIBLE FUTURE VISION OF MULTI-SENSORY MOBILE COMMUNICATION
- IAN GINN: DEEP MEDIA, IMMERSIVE STORYTELLING, WHAT NEXT?
- ORVAR SÄFSTRÖM: THE ROAD AHEAD
- MATT COSTELLO: PLAYING WITH TV
- ANDREA SAVERI: IS SOCIAL TV THE FUTURE?

- MAARTEN LENS FITZGERALD: AUGMENTED REALITY – WHAT’S IN IT FOR TV?
- McINTOSH ROB: FROM SCREEN TO SCREEN
Organizer of the day Nicoletta Iacobacci, EBU Head of Multiplatform, commented:
“The ‘lean-back’ experience of watching television is being transformed into a ‘lean-forward’, experience expected by audiences, and public service media will provide it all.”
The “Proud to Present” sessions integrated throughout the day showcased the best in public service programming from the past year.
Those chosen were as follows:
Children: The Little Boy and the Beast (ZDF, Germany)
Intercultural: Lukaku’s School (VRT, Belgium)
Documentary: Position of the Stars (NPO, The Netherlands)
Entertainment: Our Stars for Oslo (NDR, Germany)
Education: Sex on the Map (UR, Sweden)
Fiction: Five Daughters (BBC, UK)
Multiplatform: In Therapie – A Social Media Experience (NPO, The Netherlands)
Branding: This Time for Africa (BBC/SRF/ZDF)
Music & Dance: The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra performing the New York Concert and Schönbrunn Concert (ORF, Austria)
Format: The Farmer (DR, Denmark)
Science: Journey to the Core of Life (SWR/WDR/UR)

Wednesday 4 May: Common Focus Day
The Common Focus Day will have a revamped format and will focus on the future of Public Service Broadcasting, delving into how to engage and entertain new generations in an immersive way: “20/20 Vision – an eye opener”.
The Common Focus Day is a world-class conference providing keynote speeches from the movers and shakers of the media world. The day provides a unique opportunity for networking with public service media experts. The theme of the Common Focus Day 2011 is:
20/20 Vision – an eye opener
This year the Common Focus Day will have a revamped format and will focus on the future of public service broadcasting, delving into how to engage and entertain new generations in an immersive way: 20/20 Vision – an eye opener.
An exciting line-up of innovative and inspiring speakers will introduce a variety of cutting-edge subjects through the eyes of a younger generation.
Not to be missed, the most recent winner of the NEA Foundation Award, 13-year-old child prodigy Adora Svitak, will speak about the role her generation plays in the future of broadcasting. We will identify and debate new ways of capturing the attention of audiences from topics such as Multiplatform Storytelling, the Gamification of TV, The Digital Living Room, Augmented Reality – What’s on it for TV? and Thinking Interactive.
Learn how to use cutting-edge applications to deliver content through all possible cracks!
In addition to striving for the new, we uphold the tradition of the Common Focus Day by paying tribute to best public service broadcasting programmes from 2010. The Proud to Present Session, an extremely popular part of the event, is interspersed throughout the Common Focus Day.
In the past the Common Focus Day has had the honour and pleasure of welcoming speakers such as director Jean-Claude Carrière, media personality Sir Terry Wogan, composer Ennio Morricone, director Jean-Jacques Annaud, war photographer Phil Bye, cinematographer Billy Williams, YouTube director Patrick Walker, and many more.
Adora Svitak – Opening Speaker
Adora Svitak is from Redmond, Washington, and could read and write simple words by the age of 2½, wrote short stories at 4 and, at 13, is already a published author, an accomplished speaker and the youngest individual to receive the prestigious NEA Foundation Award for Outstanding Service to Public Education. This prize has previously been awarded to former President Bill Clinton and Title IX advocate Billie Jean King.
It is a great honour to have Adora Svitak as a guest speaker at the Common Focus Day at the Eurovision TV Summit. She is an inspiration to children and adults alike.
Jørgen Franck – Host
Eurovision TV Director a.i.
Jørgen Franck will be the host of this Common Focus Day.
Jørgen Franck, a Danish national, took office as Director ad interim of Eurovision TV on 1 January 2010. Jørgen’s career has followed a double track as he spent two decades as a classical musician, playing the principal oboe in the Danish Radio Sinfonietta, before he took advantage of his Masters degree in Law to occupy the post of Head of Legal Affairs at Danish broadcaster DR. He was CEO of the Nordmagi TV project founded by public service broadcasters in four Scandinavian countries to facilitate the production of pan-Nordic programming for children. This multi-facetted knowledge of the public service broadcasting business led to the jump to the EBU and Eurovision TV
in 2002 as right hand to the EurovisionTV Director.
