Eurovision Fiction Experts

“Never give them what you think they want, but what they don’t know they need!” Yes, but how? What are the success factors when conquering American and Arabic markets? In a number of case studies, we will dive into processes behind dramas that have both touched hearts and travelled. Being in Scandinavia, we take a special look at Nordic quality, not forgetting the Scandinavian funding system. Should film and TV support broaden their scope to include gaming? As PBS companies all over the world are seeking to reach young audiences, we will also find out what has worked and what not: what are the ‘bubbles’ and what are the must-haves in the transmedia production sector?

Eurovision Children’s Drama & Documentary Series screenings

The children’s documentary series (09:00-15:45)
The children’s documentary series has the theme ‘Face Your Fears’ and looks at children coping with the challenges of their lives with courage and optimism. Participation in this coproduction means a broadcaster makes a single 15-minute film and in exchange receives the whole series. Films are made to high professional standards and have won many international film awards. Marion Creely, the series executive producer, will introduce the series and will act as a guide through the whole screening.

The Children’s drama series (13:15-19:15)
Children’s drama series ‘Lost’ is a unique opportunity to reach millions of children all over the world. The stories feature children actively overcoming many challenges. Participation in this coproduction means a broadcaster produces a single 15-minute film, and in exchange can receive the whole series. Films are made to high professional standards and have won many international film awards. Beryl Richards, will introduce the series and will act as a guide through the whole screening.

Special Focus Day

The former Common Focus Day will be transformed into a Special Focus Day. This year the special focus will be on Nordic television and media in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland. Delegates will discover the strategy and values of Nordic public service and commercial broadcasters.

The Special Focus Day will be a unique opportunity to share, network and learn about their work and experiences. Well known TV directors, TV producers, creative TV developers, and special talent, will present highlights in programming, new successful formats, and new trends in Nordic television.

The Special Focus Day will of course include the ever-popular Proud to Present showcasing the best in European public service programming of the year in all genres from 2011. Eurovision TV experts groups have carefully selected the best of public service broadcasting programmes in Europe.

EBU TV Assembly

The EBU TV Assembly provides a unique opportunity for TV directors and decision-makers to discuss key ideas and strategies in television management, production and programming. Emerging issues in public service broadcasting are examined through inspiring presentations and interactive professional discussions.
This year the focus will be on the leadership of TV stations in times of budget cuts and downsizing. What are your considerations when you need to make intelligent prioritizations and how do you implement your decisions?
The keynote speech will be given by former BBC Director-General Greg Dyke. Mr Dyke will speak about the leadership of public service broadcasters. The keynote will be followed by TV directors who recently experienced budget cuts at their stations. They will share their experiences on how they managed.
The TV Assembly will also hold a bye-election for one member of the TV Committee, whose function it is to oversee the operations of Eurovision TV.
EBU Media Director Annika Nyberg Frankenhaeuser and TV Committee Chairman Ruurd Bierman will open the session and Eurovision TV Director a.i. Jørgen Franck will present Eurovision TV achievements in 2011 and goals for 2012.

Eurovision Children & Youth Experts

The 2012 Eurovision Children & Youth Expert Meeting has been intensively prepared with a group of members and acclaimed specialists. Efficiently focused, it is specifically aimed at Heads of children TV department, channel, and/or production to bring and exchange information and views, stimulating new ways of thinking, leading to decisions for action and cooperation.

The morning plenary session will address important future group orientations, results and opportunities in the following areas:
- Public services priorities in our international changing media landscape, with highly qualified research presentations
- New animation cooperation ideas
- Existing and upcoming children’s channels specific exchange
- Successful Scandinavian models of cooperation
- Together with the strong Erfurt exchange, a preschool opportunity
- New ideas like a “format for free” initiative
- An inspirational Scandinavian speaker to broaden thoughts and knowledge

Then in the afternoon, 4 subgroups sessions, either for strategic Heads or for content driven decision makers, will work on this matters.

Together, we will make sure that our public service will further improve the quality and range of the content they provide for children and young people.
